People who believe in mysterious lake monsters, such as the Loch Ness Monster, can also look toward the ocean for some legendary deep-sea creatures. In and around Falmouth Bay, which is off the coast of Cornwall, England, people have been claiming for centuries that they have seen the sea monster called Morgawr. The beast eludes scientists, but excites locals and tourists alike, who have managed to photograph Morgawr, and even capture video footage of the monster!

Humpback: The most commonly described features from witnesses are three humps on the beast' back and a long, snake-like neck. This creature is also said to have stubby horns above its eyes and bristles or spikes down its neck.

Seal of Approval: Witnesses have said that Morgawr looks more like a mammal than a serpent, leading to a new theory of the beast's origins. Some think it may be a giant, long-necked seal that hasn't year been discovered by scientists. Others say it might be an ancient aquatic reptile known as elasmosaurus.

Birth of a Monster[]

Morgawr Back Image

This photo of Morgawr was taken by a mysterious woman named Mary.

Over the span of more than 100 years, Morgawr has become the most famous sea serpent in the world. In the late 19th century, Cornwall fishermen claimed they'd seen a creature that fit Morgawr's description, and in the mid-1970s, sightings were reported almost on a monthly basis. In 1999, John Holmes, former employee of the British Museum of Natural History in London, captured video of what looks like a huge animal in the Gerrans Bay, near Cornwall. Fans say its definitely Morgawr, and even video experts say the footage hasn't been doctored in any way.

Mysterious Mary: In 1976, a woman only known as "Mary F." took two photos of Morgawr (one shown above). She sent pictures to the local newspaper, the Falmouth Packet, which published them on the front page, fueling "Morgawr Mania."

Witch Hunt: When Morgawr spotting became popular, a few "witches" got involved. Several women swam naked in the waters of Falmouth Bay, attempting to lure Morgawr to the surface with mystical powers. Their attempts failed.

Missed Shot[]

  1. Determined to capture proof of Morgawr's existence, a monster hunter arrives at Falmouth Bay just after sunrise. He equips his camera with a large zoom lens and is ready to act if the famous sea monster comes to the surface.
  2. After a whole day of watching the water with no Morgawr in sight, the man decides to call it a day as the sun sets. Just as the man picks up his camera and turns his back, a large figure appears in the bay, but the man doesn't even see it.
