According to old Irish legends, a race of cruel monsters, called Formorians, crawled out of the sea and onto the rugged west coast of Ireland. Horribly ugly, they ruled the land and terrorized the ancient Irish people. They also possessed magical skills and used their powers to destroy their enemies. The Formorians were finally defeated by hero gods, but some evil Formorians are said to still lurk near the rocky shores.

Monster Mish-Mash: The race of Formorians was hideous to behold. Their grotesque bodies were assembled from various parts of animals, many of which lived in the Irish countryside.

Up Close & Poisonous: Poisonous sweat oozed from the Formorians’ skin and made physical contact with them fatal for other creatures. In battle, opponents tried to avoid hand-to-hand combat against these beasts.

Evil Eye[]

Formorians 1

The Formorians rose out of the Irish seas.

When Balor, king of the Formorians, was young, a potion was splashed into his eye. The eye swelled, and the effects gave Balor the ability to kill with a single glance. Because of this power, Balor had to keep his eye closed most of the time. The eye grew so big that it took four other Formorians to pry the eyelid open and unleash its fury.

Pay Up: The Formorians were harsh on the people of ancient Ireland. Their cruelty knew no limits-demanding at times that the people give up their children to the monsters.

Family Fate: When a goddess foretold that Balor would be defeated by his own grandson, the king locked his only child, a daughter named Ethlinn, in a crystal tower. Balor had no idea that Ethlinn was already pregnant.

Eye Popping[]

Formorians 2

In a long, bloody battle with the Tuatha, or “fair folk,” the great Balor becomes tired and his heavy eyelid begins to fall. Ethlinn’s son, Lugh, has grown into a man and sided with the Tuatha. Lugh notices Balor’s eye is closing and silently creeps up on his grandfather. With a magic sling, Lugh hurls a giant rock at Balor, striking the king so hard that his powerful eye pops right out of its socket. Balor is instantly killed and the rest of the Formorians flee from Ireland.
